Types of Ferro Alloys
Ferrochrome
Ferrochrome, also known as ferrochromium, typically consists of 50 to 70% chromium by weight. It is an alloy of chromium and iron, primarily used in the production of steel, accounting for approximately 80% of global consumption.
Ferro Phosphorus
Ferro phosphorus is an alloy mainly composed of iron and phosphorus, containing a small amount of silicon, carbon and other elements. It is made by reducing phosphate ore and scrap steel in an electric furnace. Ferro phosphorus is gray-black or gray-brown, with high hardness and great brittleness. Its low melting point characteristic can accelerate the deoxidation reaction of molten steel and simultaneously achieve precise addition of phosphorus elements, which is used to improve the hardness and corrosion resistance of wear-resistant steel and weathering steel.
Ferrosilicon
Ferrosilicon is a ferroalloy containing between 15% to 90% silicon by weight, with a particularly high proportion of iron silicides. It is manufactured by reducing silica with coke or iron, making it a critical deoxidizer in steel production.
Ferromanganese
Ferromanganese is known for its high manganese content and can be produced in a blast furnace or, more commonly, in a submerged arc furnace, a type of electric arc furnace. Production occurs through carbothermic reduction by heating a mixture of manganese oxide, iron oxide, and carbon.High-carbon ferromanganese is the most widely consumed ferroalloy globally in terms of quantity and is widely used in steelmaking.

Application of Ferro Alloys
Steel Production
The primary use of ferro alloys is in the production of various types of steel, including carbon steel, stainless steel, and alloy steel. They help in controlling the composition and improving the mechanical properties of steel.
Deoxidation
Ferro alloys are often used to remove oxygen from molten steel, which helps prevent the formation of oxides and improves the quality of the final product.
Alloying Agent
They are added to steel to impart specific characteristics such as increased hardness, corrosion resistance, and improved tensile strength.
Casting
Ferro alloys can be used in the casting process to enhance the properties of cast iron, such as strength and wear resistance.
Specialty Alloys
They are used to produce specialty alloys for specific applications, such as high-strength steel for automotive and aerospace applications.
Production processes
Ferro-alloys are usually produced by the reduction of a metallic ore (generally oxide).
By carbon with the addition of electric energy in a "Submerged Arc Furnace" (smelting process); Or by metals (metallo-thermic reduction), usually aluminium or silicon.
High carbon ferro-manganese is produced by the reduction of manganese ore by carbon, in electric submerged-arc furnaces or in blast furnaces.
Medium and low carbon ferro-manganese are produced either by refining high carbon FeMn or by using silico-manganese as a raw material.
Silico-manganese is produced by silico-thermic reduction, in electric submerged-arc furnaces, using manganese ores and/or slags from the production of ferro-manganese.
Silicon is commonly produced by a "Submerged Arc Furnace".
Polycrystalline silicon (PCS), a hyper form of Silicon (99.9999999), is produced for semi-conductors and solar cells by a chlorination process in a special reactor metallurgical-grade silicon followed by a reaction in the presence of hydrogen at high temperatures.
A very pure Silicon is also produced by a patented hydrometallurgical process. This process removes the impurities in high silicon by treatment in an iron chloride solution, followed by a further purification process.
