High carbon silicon, often referred to as high-carbon silicon alloy, is a specialized ferroalloy distinguished by its elevated silicon (Si) content and notably higher carbon (C) levels compared to standard ferrosilicon. Composed primarily of silicon and carbon, it also contains minor proportions of iron and trace impurities like aluminum and calcium. As a critical auxiliary material in sectors such as metallurgy and casting, its operational performance is closely tied to its compositional ratio-different grade specifications are therefore tailored to meet distinct industrial application needs.

1. Physical Characteristics
At ambient temperature, high carbon silicon presents as a silver-gray or dark gray block-shaped solid. Its cross-section exhibits a metallic luster, while its material properties are defined by high hardness paired with significant brittleness, making it prone to fragmentation during handling. This inherent brittleness is often leveraged in industrial settings, where the alloy is typically crushed into 5–50mm granules to facilitate uniform feeding into molten metal systems.

2. Key Functional Applications
Unlike conventional ferrosilicon, high carbon silicon's utility stems from its unique ability to combine silicon-driven reactivity with carbon's material-modifying properties. Its core applications are centered on solving specific industrial challenges, such as impurity removal, cost optimization, and performance enhancement of end products:

① Molten Steel Deoxidation & Purification
A primary use of high carbon silicon lies in refining molten steel, where its silicon component acts as a potent deoxidizer. Silicon reacts with dissolved oxygen in the molten steel to form silicon dioxide (SiO₂). This SiO₂ then interacts with other elements in the melt-such as calcium and aluminum-to generate a low-melting-point slag. As the molten steel settles, this slag floats to the surface and is skimmed off, effectively reducing the oxygen content in the final steel product. This step is critical because excessive residual oxygen in steel causes "hot brittleness," a defect that significantly diminishes the material's tensile strength and structural integrity.
