Manganese Metal
Manganese metal is a grayish-white, hard yet brittle metal, typically coated with a brown oxide film on its surface. When heated, it forms an iridescent oxide layer. Its physical properties include a melting point of 1244°C, a boiling point of 1962°C, and a density of 7.20 g/cm³. As an important industrial metal material, manganese exhibits high chemical reactivity and is prone to oxidation. It reacts with acids to produce hydrogen gas and can directly combine with water, halogens, and other substances at high temperatures.

Industrial Applications of Manganese Metal

Manganese metal is an element remaining in steel during the steelmaking process through deoxidation with ferro manganese. It offers multiple core functions that significantly optimize steel performance:

It has excellent deoxidizing capacity, capable of reducing FeO in steel to iron and effectively improving the basic quality of steel.

It can combine with sulfur in steel to form MnS, thereby mitigating the harmful effects of sulfur, reducing steel brittleness and improving its hot workability.

Most manganese can dissolve in ferrite to form substitutional solid solutions, and enhance the strength and hardness of steel by strengthening the ferrite.
