Ca Metal - Overview

Calcium is a chemical element; it has symbol Ca and atomic number 20. As an alkaline earth metal, calcium is a reactive metal that forms a dark oxide-nitride layer when exposed to air. Its physical and chemical properties are most similar to its heavier homologues strontium and barium.

Applications of Ca Metal

Calcium Metal

Steel and Alloy Production

Calcium is widely used in the production of specialty steels and alloy steels, where it serves as a powerful deoxidizer, decarburizer, and desulfurizer. Its high reactivity with oxygen and sulfur makes it ideal for removing these impurities from molten steel, which improves the mechanical properties and durability of the final product. Calcium's reducing power is also utilized to produce high-purity rare earth metals, which are critical in the development of advanced materials for electronics, energy, and aerospace industries.

Lead-Calcium-Tin Batteries

One of the more recent applications of calcium is in the production of maintenance-free lead-calcium-tin batteries. These batteries are widely used in automotive and industrial settings due to their superior performance and reduced maintenance requirements. The addition of calcium to the lead alloy used in battery grids improves the battery's resistance to corrosion and reduces the need for periodic maintenance, making them more durable and cost-effective in the long term.

Hydride and Alloy Production

Calcium is also a critical component in the production of calcium hydride (CaH2), which is used as a drying agent for solvents and gases. Calcium hydride is effective at removing moisture from various substances, making it valuable in chemical synthesis and storage. Additionally, calcium is used to produce certain metal alloys, particularly in the development of bearing alloys, where its presence improves the strength and wear resistance of the material.

Other Applications

Beyond its use in metallurgy, calcium metal is utilized in the production of other chemical compounds, including hydrogen gas, and in specialized electrochemical applications. It also plays a role in the manufacture of electrodes for batteries and certain types of alloys used in high-performance applications.

Preparation Methods of Calcium Metal

Electrolysis Method
The electrolytic production of calcium involves the use of anhydrous calcium chloride (CaCl2) as the electrolyte. This process starts by thoroughly drying and melting calcium chloride. The molten calcium chloride is then introduced into an electrolytic cell, where a graphite anode and a steel cathode are submerged in the electrolyte. Upon applying an electric current with a voltage of approximately 20–25 volts and a current of 350–450 amps, calcium ions migrate toward the cathode, where they are reduced to form calcium metal. During the process, chlorine gas is liberated at the anode. As calcium metal accumulates at the cathode, it is carefully removed, often by lowering the current to prevent excessive build-up. The extracted calcium is then stored under oil or in an inert atmosphere to prevent oxidation. Chlorine gas, a byproduct of the process, is collected and often reused, making this method both efficient and economically viable.

Thermal Reduction Method
Another common method for producing calcium metal is the thermal reduction of calcium oxide (CaO). This method typically involves using limestone as the starting material. The limestone is calcined (heated strongly) to produce calcium oxide, which is then mixed with aluminum powder, acting as the reducing agent. The mixture is compressed into blocks and placed in a vacuum furnace where it is heated to high temperatures. Under these conditions, calcium oxide reacts with the aluminum, reducing the calcium oxide to calcium vapor and producing calcium aluminate as a byproduct. The calcium vapor is then condensed into a solid form and cast into ingots. The thermal reduction method is widely used because it is effective at producing high-purity calcium, which is crucial for certain industrial applications.

FAQ

Q: Is calcium metal malleable?

A: Calcium (Ca) is an alkaline-earth metal belonging to the second group and to the fourth period. It is a white-silver, ductile and malleable metal, even at lower temperatures.

Q: What are the properties of calcium metal?

A: Colour: Silvery-white metallic.
Phase: Solid.
Hardness: Relatively soft metal.
Crystalline structure: Cubic.

Q: Is Ca very reactive as a metal?

A: It is very reactive and reacts vigorously with water, liberating hydrogen and forming calcium hydroxide, Ca(OH)2. Calcium does not readily oxidize in dry air at room temperature but is quickly oxidized in moist air or in dry oxygen at about 300°C.
