The main difference between silicon metal and ferrosilicon (FeSi) lies in composition and applications:

 

 

Silicon metal is high-purity silicon (Si content usually ≥98%, often reaching 99% or higher in refined grades like 441, 3303, or 2202, with tightly controlled low levels of impurities such as iron, aluminum, and calcium). It serves as a critical raw material in several high-value industries: in the aluminum sector, it is added (typically 5–15%) to create lightweight, strong, and corrosion-resistant alloys (e.g., Silumin for automotive parts, wheels, and construction materials); in the chemicals industry, it acts as the primary feedstock for producing silicones-including silicone rubber (for seals, medical devices, and high-temperature gaskets), silicone oils, resins, and silanes used in coatings, adhesives, and cosmetics; in photovoltaics, it is refined further into polysilicon for solar cells and panels; and in semiconductors/electronics, ultra-high-purity grades form the basis for wafers, integrated circuits, and microchips essential to modern technology.

Ferrosilicon is a silicon-iron alloy (Si content typically 65–75% in the most common grades like FeSi75, though ranging from 45% to 90%, with the balance mostly iron plus minor elements like Al, Ca, Mn, and C). It plays a vital role in the steel industry as both a powerful deoxidizer-removing excess oxygen from molten steel to prevent harmful inclusions, improve cleanliness, and ensure better quality during casting (especially in continuous casting processes)-and an alloying additive that introduces silicon to enhance key properties such as tensile strength, elasticity, hardness, wear resistance, oxidation resistance, and magnetic characteristics (e.g., in electrical transformer steels or spring steels). Additional benefits include slag reduction in stainless steel production (recovering chromium) and use in foundries as an inoculant or nodulizer for cast iron to control graphite structure and improve ductility.

In short: Silicon metal delivers "pure silicon" for high-tech and chemical industries; ferrosilicon is "silicon with iron" designed specifically for steelmaking. Although both are produced in similar ways, their uses are completely different and they are not interchangeable.
