Low-carbon ferro manganese (LC FeMn) has carbon content ≤0.5% (often as low as 0.1–0.15%), while high-carbon ferro manganese (HC FeMn) has 6–8% carbon.

High Carbon Ferro Manganese

HC FeMn is cheaper and simpler to produce, making it ideal for ordinary carbon steels and cast iron where higher residual carbon is acceptable. LC FeMn requires extra refining (e.g., oxygen blowing or silicothermic process), costs more, but allows precise manganese addition with minimal carbon pickup-essential for stainless steel, tool steel, heat-resistant steel, and other low-carbon or controlled-carbon high-quality steels to maintain better toughness, weldability, ductility, and cleanliness.
