
Carbon content in ferrochrome directly affects how well the steel resists rust and stays strong.
High-carbon ferrochrome (4–8% carbon) adds plenty of carbon to the steel. When the steel is heated (like during welding), this carbon grabs chromium to form brittle particles at the grain edges. These particles leave nearby areas short of chromium, creating weak spots that rust easily.
Low-carbon ferrochrome (under 0.5%, usually about 0.1%) adds almost no extra carbon. Few brittle particles form, chromium stays evenly distributed, and the steel gets much better rust resistance, toughness, and weld quality-ideal for high-end uses like kitchen stainless or chemical equipment.
Bottom line: High carbon is cheaper but risks corrosion problems; low carbon costs more but gives reliable, long-lasting steel.
