Silicon Carbide

When Silicon Carbide (SiC) is added to the furnace, it decomposes into silicon (Si) and carbon (C) during the melting process for cast iron production. This dual contribution achieves two key benefits:

It effectively increases the carbon content (carburization), raising the carbon equivalent in the melt.

It enhances the reducibility of the molten iron, counteracting the adverse effects of charge rust or oxidation.

As a result, SiC significantly reduces carbide precipitation, promotes a higher ferrite content in the matrix, and creates a denser, more compact cast iron structure. This leads to markedly improved machinability, with cleaner and brighter machined surfaces.

In nodular (ductile) cast iron, SiC increases the number of graphite nodules per unit area and improves the spheroidization (nodularity) rate. It also effectively reduces non-metallic inclusions and slag formation, while eliminating shrinkage porosity, subcutaneous blowholes, and other defects-ultimately enhancing overall casting quality, yield, and performance.
