Light gray metal, brittle. Relative density 7.20. melting point (1244°C). Boiling point 1962℃. Soluble in dilute acid. Manganese reacts with water in water and can act with halogens, sulfur, phosphorus, carbon and silicon. There are cubic and tetragonal forms, and has a complex crystal structure. In melting, manganese vapor and oxygen in the air to form oxides. Electrolytic manganese metal generally contains more than 99.7% manganese. Pure electrolytic manganese cannot be processed, but if 1% nickel is added, it becomes a malleable alloy.

In the iron and steel industry, it is mainly used in the desulfurization and deoxidation of steel; it is also used as an alloying additive to improve the strength, hardness, elasticity limit, abrasion resistance and corrosion resistance of steel, etc.; it is also used as an austenitic compounding element in high-alloyed steel and is used in the refining of stainless steel, special alloy steel and stainless steel welding rods. In addition, it is also used in non-ferrous metals, chemical industry, medicine, food, analysis and scientific research.
